GARY NASH
Thirty-five years after he started, Garry Nash still talks about the magic of glass-blowing. It is the molten state that captives him, the process of creating a form and retaining it—that brief period when a team wrestles with the hot liquid mass that collapses so easily under gravity. Once the work has cooled he no longer feels the same attachment to it, and this allows him to sell the work.
There is a pleasure for Nash in working with a permanent material. He is driven by wanting to leave artifacts that record the experience of living in our time for future generations. When it comes to recording history, he sees objects as much more eloquent than words. Nash enjoys working both on a large and small scale. For Nash, glass blowing stays fresh by experimentation and pushing the limits of the material.
Garry Nash exhibits internationally and has been featured in many prestigious collections and exhibitions, including the Auckland Museum; the Manly Art Gallery, Sydney, Australia; the Glass Museum in Ebeltof, Denmark; and the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery. He is an honorary life member and the current President of the New Zealand Society of Artists in Glass. In 2001 Garry was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Glass Art.
“Colour is the corner stone of the studio glass movement. I combine colour and form in my work to evoke an emotional response.”
~ Garry Nash
