LORIANN SIGNORI
Loriann Signori has been painting for over 40 years. Born in Connecticut, Loriann spent most of her time in the woods and lakes surrounding her home. At about age 10, her love of the landscape ignited her life-long passion for plein air painting. And so the journey began.
‘When I began painting I painted things the way I saw them,” Signori explains, “very recognizable, very realistic, after 10 years I felt there was nothing left to say. I wanted to get more from a painting and I wanted to go deeper.” That is when the journey had direction.
While Loriann still paints outdoors, much of her work relies on her memory. Her goal is not to create a specific place, rather a peaceful radiance, and a glow of light remembered. Later, in the studio, she uses her plethora of small paintings to form new concepts and experiment with color vibration. She says, “It is about having a dialogue with the painting. It talks and I listen.” As time has passed her work is less about the specific and more about the transcendental. While Loriann’s subject is the Mid-Atlantic trees, hills, and sky, her newer work is increasingly, and beguilingly, unnaturalistic and soothing.
